Two reasons why Julia Thatcher has lost my vote.

Stop me if you've heard this one before.
"Ms Kosky’s office did not respond when questioned about whether the latest breakdown was proof she was failing in her job."
"Instead, her spokesman, Stephen Moynihan, pointed to the $500 million investment the Government was making to improve Melbourne’s railways over the next eight years."

Call centre closure costs Melbourne 450 jobs
Newly merged telecommunication company Vodafone Hutchison has ended a Melbourne call-centre contract, leaving 450 workers redundant.
But a damning theme in the [Bushfire] commission’s report is that many of the measures it recommends were put to the Government – some of them repeatedly – in the years before Black Saturday, only to be rejected, ignored or delayed.
Brumby is exceedingly uncomfortable about this fact, having been in the policy engine-room throughout this Government’s 10-year life.
Child abuse experts say Victoria’s child protection system is in chaos after a damning report found protection workers had placed three children in the care of convicted sex offenders.
The Victorian ombudsman report also revealed that workers from the Department of Human Services failed to carry out police checks on carers, and uncovered a child protection system under immense stress.
A Victorian man has been charged with a series of sex and incest offences allegedly committed against his daughter over a period of 30 years.
This morning Victorian Premier John Brumby said he first learned of the case late last night.
“I can’t comment on the specifics,” he said.
With his hand on his heart the Premier said that despite all of that Henny Penny nonsense, everything was rooly rooly hunkydory in the untied state of Victoria.
"We still have the Grand Prix ... and Crown Casino is providing a community service beyond compare."

Oops, shouldn’t have said that. It might be foolishly misconstrued by some unkind folks as racist.

Victoria's state budget. (Trust me, I'm a state premier.)
May 05, 2009 03:05pm
STATE debt will blow out to $16b in four years as the government ramps up spending in a bid to ward off the global financial crisis.
In a massive $42 billion budget spend the government will borrow heavily to fund infrastructure, health and bushfire recovery projects as it works to secure the jobs of thousands of Victorians.
As a result net debt will increase from $2.2 billion this year to $16 billion in 2013.
Guess the master of the bread and racing circuits, Bernie Ecclestone is still a happy little Vegemite, coz he'll still be plied with the money he wants.

"DESPITE global economic calamity and enormous cost-cutting to his famously profligate sport, formula one supremo Bernie Ecclestone will take home a record fee from Victoria for the Australian Grand Prix in a fortnight.
The Age can reveal that this year Victorian taxpayers will part with $47 million, simply for the privilege of hosting his car race.
Formula one is the platform on which Mr Ecclestone (below) has built his personal fortune, recently estimated at $5.2 billion.
The diminutive Briton runs the glamorous sport with an iron fist. He has done so, from a variety of roles, for decades."

More precious than Gollum.
Former federal treasurer Peter Costello has refused to spell out his political intentions, as rumours circulate within the Coalition about “unclean” deals.
Mr Costello is in the spotlight again because it has been revealed that on Sunday he turned down Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull’s offer to replace Julie Bishop as Treasury spokesperson.
Today Mr Costello would not comment.
“Oh I don’t want to go into those things,” he said.
Paul "The Treasurer we had to have" Keating recently-ish said about 'Dollar Sweetie' Costello, "All tip, no iceberg."
Might we suggest that comment was far too generous, and suggest a more appropriate alternative. "All Paddlepop, no stick."
Our other suggestion is, "Bugger off Tip, few are listening - and even less are interested."
At lest eunuchs did have a marginally functional role in the harem.
Something said by Brendan Nelson of which 'Tip' might (but probably will not) take notice.
"One thing I'll never be is some sort of seat warmer."
Good call Brendan. One of your few good calls - but a rooly good 'un.

Nicola! Nicola! Nicola!
A gay rights group is calling on the Federal Government to sack both of the men’s health ambassadors who have been linked to a document criticising homosexuality.
Barry Williams from the Lone Fathers group and the Fatherhood Foundation’s Warwick Marsh are listed as authors of a publication that says homosexuality is a disorder. The publication was published by Mr Marsh’s organisation.
The Government has dismissed Mr Marsh but has retained Mr Williams, who has distanced himself from the document.
Federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon says the document’s statements on homosexuality are “quite abhorrent” but she is prepared to accept Mr Williams’s explanation about why his name appeared on the document.
“Look, it is very strong stuff but I think that this is a document that was authored by 34 people. I think that Mr Williams’ sins are not having read and taken care what he put his name to,” she said.
I think that Ms Roxon’s sin is also not having read and taken care what she put her name to.
I think that also not taking care to what he put his name was why Kelvin Thompson lost his shadow front bench position.
Does Nicola think that having a person who doesn't read and take care about what he puts his name to is the best person to inform the Government on men's health matters?

"We will decide who comes to this country and the circumstances in which they come." The World Yoof Day edition.
“We were moved by the Pope’s compassionate response to us and his comment that he would continue to pray for all victims of sexual abuse,” they said.
But several other abuse victims slammed the church over the secret meeting with handpicked survivors.
Anthony Jones — whose case the church reopened after Lateline revealed his alleged abuser had admitted to the attack — said he suspected the church had chosen people who were happy with its internal processes and who it “knew would graciously accept the apology and not question the Pope”
The four victims at the Mass had gone through the church’s much-criticised internal program for sex abuse survivors.
The man who chose them has admitted he had looked for people who would be “comfortable in attending the Mass”.
"We will decide who comes to this mass and the circumstances in which they come."

In my next life I want to come back as one of those teflon-coated footballers.
Adelaide Crows footballer Scott Thompson has been given a suspended jail sentence for hoon driving.
Thompson, 25, had pleaded guilty in Port Adelaide Magistrates Court to causing serious harm by dangerous driving and leaving the scene of an accident at Fulham last November.
Magistrate Paul Foley said Thompson panicked after crashing into a pole.
His friend Adam Sampson was seriously injured.
Mr Foley said he could have jailed the midfielder for five years for each offence, but instead he set a four-month prison term which he suspended.

Guess who's coming to dinner ... just a bit late.
"Police will not prosecute artist Bill Henson over his photographs of naked teenagers, declared "mild and justified" by Australia's Classification Board."
"NSW police today indicated charges would not be laid."
Mr Garrett says the courtroom is not the right place to debate the merits of art.
“The courts were not the appropriate forum for resolving strongly held views in a debate which I think is much wider than just the impact or otherwise of works of art,” he said.
“We shouldn’t see the police knocking on the doors of art galleries to try to resolve matters which are really better resolved by the community having mature debate.”
Yep, good onya Pete, you are a representative and spokesperson for a party which contains members who have has added to the debate in a magnificently mature manner.
NSW Premier Morris said they were “offensive and disgusting”
Mr Rudd has labelled Henson’s photographs of naked teenagers — seized by police from a Sydney gallery last week — “absolutely revolting”
Of course we all noticed how Pete was way up front defending the artist, giving some balance to the Kev and Morrie's knee jerkery well before the whole case was shown to have had no legs. Much in the same way Pete has been shown to have had no backbone.
"How can we dance when our earth is turning?

It's all relative.
Bush seeks millions to face food crisis
May 2 2008. US President George W Bush has urged lawmakers to approve $US770 million in new aid to cope with soaring food prices that have left many hungry and fueled angry protests around the world.
Bush seeks billions more in military funding
October 23, 2007. President Bush on Monday sent Congress a $45.9-billion emergency funding request for expenses related to U.S. military campaigns around the world.
The request, which comes on top of $147.5 billion sought by the administration earlier this year, pushes the cost of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to more than $600 billion.

The meetings John Brumby rejects, make John Brumby's double standards the best.
Victorian Premier John Brumby says his government is willing to resume wage negotiations with teachers at any time, but he has ruled out becoming personally involved in the talks.
“We’re willing, I think, to sit down at any time, so whenever they’re ready, we’re ready,” Mr Brumby told reporters. However, he ruled out entering negotiations himself.
“Obviously if you do that then every single industrial issue or EBA that comes up before government, then people expect the minister or the premier to be there and it’s just not practical or realistic to believe that that could be the case,” he said.
So our dear John, ex teacher and ex AEU rep, Brumby (like Keating said, “there’s nothing more ‘ex’ than an ex Prime Minister”) won’t sit down and talk with representatives of the worst paid teachers in Australia. However he can find time to have a wee chat with the even wee-er Bernie Ecclestone to work out how Victorians can lose even more money by retaining the Grand Prix on the hideously coiffed Dwarf’s terms.

Melbourne’s Formula One 2007 Grand Prix ran at a $34.6 million loss, a report tabled in the Victorian parliament today shows.
The Grand Prix report, one of about 130 tabled in state parliament today, shows revenue decreased from $47.5 million in 2006 to $43.4 million this year.
The event cost more than $78 million to run, with the Victorian government picking up the tab for the shortfall.
With the cost of the event under intense scrutiny – the 2008 race is forecast to cost Victorian taxpayers $40million – Mr Walker defended the escalating and undisclosed license fee charged by Mr Ecclestone every year. He said the cost of building and dismantling the temporary circuit was running at about $30 million a year. The additional cost of running the event under lights is estimated at $60 million.
"Whether the move is sufficient to satisfy grand prix supremo Bernie Ecclestone’s demands for a night race is likely be known within the next six months, as the Victorian Government and Australian Grand Prix chairman Ron Walker enter negotiations on the future of the Albert Park race beyond 2010."
"Mr Walker said yesterday the fate of the event would be decided before Premier John Brumby travelled to London to meet Mr Ecclestone in October."

Who do you trust to jesuiticaly argue a way out of embarassing situations?
Federal Health Minister Tony Abbott insists an amateur tape of him speaking at an electorate function early this week has been edited, and is demanding an apology from Opposition Leader Kevin Rudd.
Labor has distributed the video, shown last night on ABC TV’s Lateline, in which Mr Abbott appears to say that under WorkChoices, workers protections have been removed.
Earlier, Mr Abbott said he was not embarrassed by the views he expressed in the video, arguing some of the protections that have been removed by WorkChoices were counter-productive.
But now says he has checked the transcript of his speech at that event and he insists the tape has been edited.
“However, Health Minister Tony Abbott said the conversation ["Costellocks and the 3 Journalists"] was off the record and therefore did not exist.
“If (the remarks) were off the record in 2005, they should also be off the record in 2007,” Mr Abbott said.
“And if something is off the record it in effect doesn’t exist and there’s nothing wrong with denying something that didn’t exist.”
Nope, poor old Tony's not as good as Jack W.H., his master. Quit while you're only this far behind Tone, and take your own Workchoices advice and get another job.
JUST IN. A late breaking response to this posting from the Merde Monk.
"That's bullshit. You're being deliberately unpleasant. I suppose you can't help yourself, can you?"
(And just in case you think that this has been unfairly edited, here it is in its full context.)

A grudging, minimal, screaming and kicking Damascus Road moment brought to you by the letters, C -R -O- S- B- Y- A- N -D -T -E -X -T -O- R.
ABORIGINAL reconciliation will be a key policy priority if the Coalition is re-elected, Prime Minster John Howard has just announced.
Mr Howard admitted he had struggled with reconciliation throughout his 11 years as prime minister.
He accepted his share of the blame for “low points” in relations between his government and indigenous people.
“The challenge I have faced around indigenous identity politics is in part an artefact of who I am and the time in which I grew up,” Mr Howard said
You 'k'n' rodential tosser! There are many of us Australians of your 'artefactual' generation who have NEVER faced that *challenge*. Many Australians who have NEVER seen that whole sorry issue as a *challenge*. It sure as Hell speaks volumes about the very challenged "who I am" John Winston Howard.
ABORIGINAL reconciliation will be a key policy priority if the Coalition is re-elected, Prime Minster John Howard has just announced.
Subtext? "Vote us back in or we shoot the reconciliation kid!"
Wonder what odds a friendly bookmaker might give the punters on John Dubya's election campaign starting out with these words, "I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal."
UPDATE.
Is there a Robinson Crusoe out there who still gives the Rodent the benefit of the doubt? Any shipwrecked, every man is an island fool who still thinks that this was a truly Damascene experience and who still believes that the rodential mea culpa "ah ha" experience has nothing to do with the upcoming election?
Exhibit 'A'
ONLY a re-elected Coalition Government can push forward reconciliation with Australia’s indigenous people, Prime Minister John Howard says.
Last night Mr Howard pledged to hold a referendum on whether the preamble to the Australian constitution should be amended to recognise Aboriginal people as the first Australians.
The Opposition has given it bipartisan support, but Mr Howard said today the Labor Party lacked the ability to unite the Australian community.
“I don’t believe Labor could unite conservative and progressive Australians on this issue,” he said.
BRING IT ON!
